These chunks are mostly pink to red chalcedony and agate from Tarazout in the Sidi Rahal area of Morocco's Atlas Mountains.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAt Sidi Rahal, silica-filled nodules formed in cavities in Triassic volcanic rock. A study in GIA's Gems \u0026amp; Gemology (Fall 2013) found that the pink outer rim of these nodules is opal-CT, a poorly crystalline form of silica, and that the red to red-brown layer gets its colour from the iron oxides hematite and goethite. So the \"coloured by hematite\" description applies to the red rim, not to amethyst crystals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eTrue amethyst is quartz coloured purple by traces of iron combined with natural radiation. These pieces show little or no amethyst.
