Description: Ammonite fossils are spiral-shaped, marine mollusk fossils that belong to the extinct group of cephalopods known as Ammonoidea. These creatures lived in the oceans during the Mesozoic Era and were characterized by their coiled shells, which resemble tightly wound spirals.  Ammonites had tentacles, a soft body, and a chambered shell that they used for buoyancy and protection. These fascinating creatures were diverse in size, shape, and ornamentation, with some species growing as large as several feet in diameter.

These specimens are particularly unique as the ammonite fossils are removable from the matrix and neatly fits back together with the matrix like a puzzle piece. The black coloration of these fossils is due to the type of minerals or environmental conditions present during the fossilization process.
