Description: Apophyllite is a hydrous phyllosilicate mineral typically composed of potassium, calcium, and fluorine, known for its distinctive crystal formations and beautiful colors. It often occurs as transparent to translucent crystals that can range in color from colorless to shades of green, pink, and white. This lot features single apophyllite points. these specimens are textbook examples of the pyramidal prismatic crystal habit of this mineral species.
Apophyllite often grows in association with zeolite minerals such as stilbite, but is not itself a zeolite. Tectosilicates such as the minerals in the zeolite group have a three-dimensional framework structure where silicon-oxygen tetrahedra are linked together in all directions, creating a robust framework. This structure forms cavities and channels that can hold water and exchange ions. In contrast, phyllosilicates like apophyllite have a two-dimensional, sheet-like structure, where the tetrahedra are arranged in layers.
