Description: Black obsidian from the Burns area of Oregon is a natural volcanic glass with a clean, dark body color and a bright vitreous luster. A spalled face shows the fresh interior where the stone has broken with the curved, shell-like fracture obsidian is known for, giving it sharp edges and a raw, glassy surface. It has a stark, clean look that makes it popular for display, flintknapping, and lapidary use. 

These specimens are available as individual spalled halves, or two spalled halves of a cobble. 

This material is generally associated with the Glass Buttes volcanic field, a famous Oregon obsidian locality west of Burns known for producing a wide range of obsidian varieties, including black, mahogany, rainbow, and sheen material. Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools so quickly that atoms do not have time to organize into crystals, leaving behind a natural glass instead of a crystalline rock. That rapid cooling is what gives obsidian its smooth texture, conchoidal fracture, and razor-sharp edges.

Metaphysically, black obsidian is often associated with protection, grounding, and truth. Many people are drawn to it as a stone for cutting through emotional clutter, exposing what has been buried, and creating a stronger sense of energetic boundaries. Its direct, no-nonsense appearance has made it a long-standing favorite for people who want a stone that feels solid, serious, and strong.
