Beschreibung

Mined from: Balochistan Fluorite Mine, near Dalbandin, Chagai District, Balochistan, Pakistan

Description: This striking specimen of fluorite displays a subtle but captivating iridescence—an optical effect caused by microscopic surface textures that reflect shifting hues of violet, green, gold, and blue as the crystal catches the light. The fluorite itself ranges from translucent smoky-lilac to pale green, with sharply formed cubic crystals and occasional stepped growth patterns. Though the iridescence may look like oil on water, it’s actually a natural oxidation effect that occurred post-formation, either underground or after exposure to surface weathering.

Fluorite (CaF₂) is a calcium fluoride mineral prized for its isometric crystal habit and exceptional color range. The deposits in Pakistan, particularly in Balochistan province near Dalbandin and Zhob, are geologically recent finds that only began entering the global mineral market in notable quantity during the 2000s. These fluorites formed in hydrothermal veins associated with granitic intrusions and are sometimes found with quartz, barite, or calcite. While Pakistan is better known for aquamarine and topaz, these fluorites have quietly earned a following for their unique surface effects and crisp geometry.

In the folklore of the region, fluorite has no longstanding traditional use—it wasn’t commonly identified until modern mineral trade reached these remote mountains. But locals sometimes refer to these stones as “ghost glass” due to their eerie glow under UV light and the way their surfaces seem to shimmer unnaturally in torchlight. Iridescent fluorite from Pakistan represents a relatively new chapter in mineral collecting—an uncommon visual phenomenon from an underappreciated source.
