Beschreibung

Mined from: Grootfontein, Namibia

Description: The Hoba meteorite is the largest known intact meteorite ever discovered, weighing over 60 tonnes and located on a farm near Grootfontein, Namibia. Classified as an iron meteorite (IVB), it is composed primarily of iron and nickel and is believed to have formed within the core of a differentiated parent body early in the solar system’s history. Unlike many iron meteorites, Hoba shows no visible Widmanstätten pattern due to its unique chemical composition and structure.

What makes Hoba especially unusual is both its massive size and its remarkably intact condition—it was never significantly broken apart upon impact. It is thought to have landed at a relatively low velocity and at a shallow angle, which prevented the formation of a large crater. Today, it remains where it was found, offering a rare opportunity to study a massive extraterrestrial object in place and providing insight into planetary core formation and iron meteorite classification.

Chemical Composition: Fe, Ni with minor Co and trace elements; typically ~82–84% Fe and 15–17% Ni for a IVB iron meteorite.
