Mined from: Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan
Description: These tumbled flat oval lapis lazuli stones from Afghanistan are shaped for smooth handling and practical use in jewelry or display. The flat oval form provides a comfortable profile for settings or palm use, while the polish brings out the deep blue color characteristic of high-quality lapis. Many pieces also show natural inclusions of pyrite, appearing as small metallic flecks, along with occasional white calcite veining that adds contrast.
Lapis lazuli forms through contact metamorphism, where limestone is altered by heat and chemically active fluids near igneous intrusions. This process produces lazurite along with associated minerals like calcite and pyrite. The Badakhshan region of Afghanistan is one of the oldest known sources of lapis lazuli, with mining dating back over 6,000 years. Material from this locality has been historically used in carvings, pigments, and decorative objects across ancient civilizations.
Lapis lazuli is often associated with insight, expression, and awareness. Its deep blue color and long history of use give it a strong presence, and many people are drawn to it as a stone connected to knowledge and clear communication.
