Beschreibung

Mined from: Northern Sweden

Description: Muonionalusta is a well-known iron meteorite classified as a fine octahedrite (IVA), discovered in northern Sweden where it fell roughly one million years ago. Composed primarily of iron and nickel, this meteorite formed within the core of a differentiated parent body, most likely asteroid 16 Psyche. Over time, slow cooling in space allowed its internal metallic structure to organize into interlocking crystal patterns that are only revealed when the surface is cut and etched.

This meteorite is especially valued for its distinct Widmanstätten pattern, a geometric intergrowth of kamacite and taenite that reflects extremely slow cooling rates—on the order of a few degrees per million years. Its long residence in glacial environments has also contributed to its preservation and occasional natural etching. Muonionalusta offers a direct look into planetary core formation processes and remains one of the most recognizable and studied iron meteorites available.

Chemical Composition: Fe, Ni with minor Co, P, S, C; typically about 91–93% Fe and 6–8% Ni for a fine octahedrite IVA iron meteorite.
