Beschreibung

Mined from: Sahara Desert, Morocco

Description: NWA 5000 is a lunar feldspathic breccia recovered from the Sahara Desert of Morocco, representing material from the Moon’s ancient highland crust. This type of meteorite is composed largely of fragmented and reassembled rock formed through repeated impact events on the lunar surface. The high feldspar content, particularly calcium-rich plagioclase, gives it a lighter appearance compared to darker basaltic lunar meteorites.

As a breccia, NWA 5000 records a history of collisions, where fragments of pre-existing lunar rocks were broken apart and fused back together by impact energy. These meteorites are among the best samples available for studying the Moon’s early crust and impact processes. Their journey from the Moon to Earth was initiated by large impacts that ejected material into space, eventually landing in desert environments where preservation is favorable.

Chemical Composition: Dominantly Ca-rich plagioclase feldspar (anorthite: CaAl₂Si₂O₈) with minor pyroxene ((Mg,Fe,Ca)SiO₃) and trace olivine ((Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄); includes impact-related glass and breccia matrix components.
