Description: Oreodont teeth from the White River Badlands come from one of the most famous Oligocene fossil regions in North America. The White River Badlands of South Dakota are especially well known for abundant mammal fossils, and oreodonts are among the most common animals found there. In the Badlands, oreodont fossils are found most commonly in the Brule Formation, which represents an open, savannah-like ancient environment with river channels and grazing habitat.

“Oreodont” is the common name for an extinct group of hoofed mammals, with genera such as Merycoidodon well known from these deposits. Their teeth are a big part of why they are identifiable, since paleontologists use tooth shape, cusps, and ridges to distinguish fossil mammals. The Brule Formation is Oligocene in age, roughly 34 to 30 million years old, and is part of the larger White River Group.

Many people are drawn to fossil teeth because they feel direct and tangible—less like a decorative stone and more like a preserved trace of an actual animal that lived millions of years ago. Oreodont teeth are often appreciated as symbols of endurance, ancient life, and the sheer depth of geological time.
