Description: Jasper is a variety of microcrystalline quartz. The term microcrystalline refers to quartz that is composed of very small, tightly packed intergrown crystals that are not visible to the naked eye. They are intergrown so finely that they form a single cohesive opaque surface. The oxidation of iron minerals, particularly hematite, imparts the characteristic red color to red jasper. The varying concentrations of iron oxide can result in different shades of red, from deep crimson to lighter reddish-brown.
