Description: This piece of Argentine rhodochrosite shows classic deep pink to red banding with lighter cream and mauve layers running through it. The polished face reveals tight, rhythmic bands, while the rough surfaces show a more granular and slightly botryoidal texture. Small internal voids lined with tiny crystals add depth, and the contrast between the rich red zones and pale layers gives it that unmistakable “bacon strip” look these specimens are known for.

Rhodochrosite from Capillitas forms in hydrothermal veins, where manganese-rich fluids move through fractures in the rock and deposit layers of manganese carbonate over time. Each band represents a change in the chemistry of the fluid—slight shifts in temperature, pressure, or mineral content cause the color and texture to vary. Over long periods, this builds up the layered structure you see here. The stalactitic and banded growth patterns often form in open cavities, where minerals precipitate slowly from solution, similar to how cave formations develop but on a mineral scale.
