This effect forms when quartz replaces fibrous crocidolite, preserving the original parallel structure and creating the stone’s silky, shifting appearance. South Africa is one of the most important historical sources of Tiger’s Eye and produces material with strong banding and rich color.

Polished faces highlight the stone’s natural optical effect, making Tiger’s Eye a popular decorative and lapidary material. Deposits occur in banded iron formations in South Africa’s Northern Cape, where silica-rich fluids transformed earlier fibrous minerals into quartz over geological time.
