Description: Carnelian is a reddish-orange variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz colored primarily by iron oxide impurities. Its warm hue ranges from pale amber to deep red, depending on the concentration and oxidation state of iron during formation. Carnelian develops in volcanic and sedimentary environments where silica-rich solutions deposit layer upon layer of microcrystals. When polished into a worry stone, it reveals a smooth, glass-like finish and consistent color that highlights the durability and beauty of quartz.
India has been one of the world’s primary sources of carnelian since antiquity, especially from the Gujarat region. For thousands of years, Indian artisans have heat-treated chalcedony to enhance its red tone, a technique that dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization. Carnelian was used in seals, beads, and amulets across Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Rome—valued not just for its color but for its toughness and ease of carving. Modern deposits in India continue this long tradition of craftsmanship and gem production.
Metaphysically, carnelian is associated with motivation, vitality, and confidence. It is believed to inspire courage and action, helping to restore drive and enthusiasm when energy feels low.
