Descripción
Mined from: Kressenberg, Austria
Era: Jurassic
Geological Age: 195–175 mya
Description: This fossil clam shell from Kressenberg, Austria dates to the Jurassic Period, approximately 195–175 million years ago, when much of Europe was covered by warm, shallow tropical seas. During this time, marine environments supported a wide range of bivalve mollusks, including clams that lived partially buried in soft seabed sediments while filtering nutrients from the surrounding water. The fossilization of these shells occurred when sediments rapidly buried the organism after death, allowing the calcium carbonate shell to be preserved within the rock over millions of years.
The Jurassic deposits of the Northern Calcareous Alps near Kressenberg are known for preserving a variety of marine fossils, including bivalves, ammonites, and other invertebrates that inhabited these ancient seaways. Fossil clam shells from this region provide important evidence of Jurassic marine ecosystems and help paleontologists reconstruct the biodiversity and environmental conditions of prehistoric oceans during the age of dinosaurs.
