Mined from: Xianghuapu Mine, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, China

Description: This vibrant specimen features lustrous fluorite crystals in a delicate green to bluish hue, accompanied by sharp, contrasting scalenohedral calcite. The fluorite typically forms in intergrown cubes or modified octahedrons, with occasional zoning or surface phantoms. The calcite, often in golden or translucent blades, adds dramatic geometry and warmth, creating a stunning interplay of textures and mineral color.

The Xianghuapu Mine in Chenzhou, Hunan Province is part of a fluorite-rich vein system emplaced in limestone host rock, a setting conducive to the growth of both fluorite and calcite through overlapping hydrothermal pulses. Fluorite from this region is notable for its clarity, surface definition, and ability to develop alongside diverse minerals like quartz, pyrite, and barite. Specimens like this one are often retrieved from narrow cavities and pockets that must be carefully hand-mined to preserve their delicate crystal forms. The mine continues to operate for industrial fluorite production, though fine mineral specimens like this represent a rare byproduct.

Chinese folklore has no ancient record of fluorite in its cultural canon, but in recent decades, miners have nicknamed translucent fluorites from Chenzhou "dragon glass" due to their icy translucency and the green tones that resemble jade in certain lights. The presence of calcite in these specimens is not merely decorative—it’s a geological timestamp, recording a later mineralization phase that helps scientists reconstruct the vein’s complex thermal history.
