Mined from: El Hammam Mine, Ahouli, Midelt, Drâa-Tafilalet, Morocco
Description: This striking purple fluorite specimen comes from the famous El Hammam Mine in the Ahouli mining district, one of Morocco’s most prolific fluorite sources. The crystals show classic cubic formation with deep violet zoning and sharp, clean edges, often appearing stacked or intergrown. Under angled light, their surfaces reveal subtle etching or frosted faces that enhance their geometric complexity and depth of color.
The El Hammam Mine is part of a long-exploited hydrothermal vein system rich in lead, zinc, and fluorite. Located in the Midelt province of Drâa-Tafilalet, the mine has been a steady source of fluorite since the 1970s, producing specimens in shades from clear to deep purple. Unlike specimens from Taourirt or Sidi Ayad, El Hammam fluorite is known for its large, well-formed crystals and its tendency to develop on contrasting white quartz or barite matrix. These deposits were created by mineral-laden fluids moving through faults and fractures in Paleozoic limestones, precipitating fluorite over millions of years.
Though Morocco’s ancient mining culture stretches back centuries, fluorite wasn’t widely collected until the global mineral market began seeking out fine Moroccan specimens in the late 20th century. In this context, El Hammam fluorite became one of the earliest and most consistent exports. It remains a staple of Moroccan mineralogy today—recognizable, dependable, and often spectacular in form.
