Description: Armadillo scutes are the bony plates that form the protective outer covering of armadillos. These ones are from the species Holmesina floridanus, an extinct species of glyptodont, a type of large, armored mammal related to modern armadillos. Glyptodonts lived during the Pleistocene epoch, which lasted from about 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago. H. floridanus specifically lived in what is now Florida, hence its name. It was a herbivore and had a heavily armored shell, resembling a gigantic armadillo. Glyptodonts are known from fossils found in various parts of the Americas, and they are thought to have gone extinct around the end of the Pleistocene, due to a combination of climate change and human hunting pressure.
