Description: Orthoceras is a genus of extinct cephalopods that lived in the oceans during the Paleozoic era, about 500 million years ago. These creatures were similar to modern-day squid or nautilus, but had a long, straight shell that could reach up to several feet in length.

The name "Orthoceras" comes from the Greek words "ortho" meaning straight, and "keras" meaning horn. The shell of Orthoceras was made up of a series of chambers that were connected by a central tube called a siphuncle. As the animal grew, it would add new chambers to its shell, moving its body forward into the newest and largest chamber.

In addition to their aesthetic value, Orthoceras fossils also have scientific significance. They provide valuable information about the evolution of cephalopods and the ancient marine ecosystems in which they lived.
