Description: This one of a kind Orthoceras fossil statement specimen features a large polished slab packed with long, straight fossil cephalopod shells set in a dark grey to black limestone matrix. The fossils have been cut and polished to show the internal chamber structure, with white to grey banding running through many of the shells. The contrast between the black fossil forms and the speckled grey stone gives the piece a clean, bold look without needing much dressing up.

Orthoceras-style fossils like this are commonly sold from Morocco, especially from fossil-bearing limestone deposits in the Erfoud and Rissani region. These marine fossils date back hundreds of millions of years, from a time when straight-shelled cephalopods lived in ancient seas. The name “Orthoceras” is often used in the trade for these straight nautiloid fossils, though many Moroccan examples may belong to related orthocone nautiloid species rather than the strict scientific genus Orthoceras.
