Description

Mined from: Upper Permian Lopingian-Lower Sankamena Formation Ranohira, Madagascar

Era: Paleozoic
Geological Age: 252–299 mya

Description: This one of a kind Barasaurus fossil specimen from Madagascar features a split stone presentation, showing the fossil impression and counterpart across two matching matrix pieces. The preserved skeleton outline is visible in dark brown to black mineral staining against a muted grey-brown sedimentary stone, with fine rib, vertebral, limb, and body details arranged in a compact lizard-like form. The two halves display natural broken edges, layered stone texture, and earthy surface variation, giving the piece a raw fossil-plate appearance suitable for display or educational collecting.

Barasaurus was a small extinct reptile from the Late Permian period, known from fossil deposits in Madagascar. It belonged to an ancient group of parareptiles called procolophonomorphs, which lived before the rise of dinosaurs. Specimens like this are generally associated with the Sakamena deposits of Madagascar, a fossil-rich geological formation known for preserving early reptiles, amphibians, fish, and plant material from the end of the Paleozoic Era.

Fossils are often associated with grounding, patience, ancestral memory, and connection to deep time. Collectors may value Barasaurus fossils as reminders of endurance, transformation, and the long natural history of life on Earth. As a display piece, this specimen carries both scientific interest and a strong visual sense of age, making it appealing for fossil collectors, natural history enthusiasts, and those drawn to ancient Earth materials.
