Description
Mined from: Sidi Ayad, Jebel Tissalatine, Tinejdad, Errachidia Province, Drâa-Tafilalet, Morocco
Description: This remarkable specimen showcases sharply defined fluorite crystals with a subtle violet to smoky hue, accented by a natural dusting of brassy pyrite microcrystals across their surfaces. The fluorite exhibits clean cubic geometry with occasional stepped edges, while the pyrite adds a metallic shimmer that sparkles under direct light. The result is an eye-catching contrast between the glassy clarity of fluorite and the golden flecks of iron sulfide.
Sourced from the now-renowned deposits of Sidi Ayad in the Tinejdad area of Morocco’s Drâa-Tafilalet region, these specimens come from hydrothermal vein systems in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. This locality gained attention in the 2010s for producing unusually aesthetic combinations of fluorite with sulfide minerals like pyrite and galena. The fluorite here often forms in pockets lined with quartz and calcite, with pyrite crystallizing late-stage as a secondary surface coating—a feature not commonly found in Moroccan fluorite from other regions like El Hammam or Taourirt.
While Morocco has a rich history of mining and trade, the Sidi Ayad finds are relatively recent and not yet widely circulated. Many locals refer to these as “desert gems” due to their isolated origin in the arid Jebel Tissalatine range. Collectors value them for their combination of luster, sharp form, and mineral pairing—a natural partnership of light and shadow in crystalline form.
