Description

Origin: Vancouver Island, BC, Canada

DescriptionDallasite is a type of breccia that consists of shards of pillow basalt spalled from its rim. These shards are either subequant, rectangular, or elongate and curvilinear in shape. Upon partial alteration, the material is commonly associated with chlorite, epidote, quartz, and carbonate, which have led to the naming of this type of rock as 'dallasite' in the local area. This stone is called dallasite after Dallas Road, Victoria, British Columbia and is regarded as the unofficial stone of the capital city of British Columbia. Dallasite is found in Triassic volcanic rocks of Vancouver Island and is ranked as the third most significant gemstone in British Columbia.
