Description: Gebel Kamil is a notable meteorite impact site located in Egypt, specifically in the Eastern Desert near the border with Sudan. It is named after the nearby Gebel Kamil mountain. The meteorite impact site was discovered relatively recently, in 2008. The impact event at Gebel Kamil is thought to have occurred approximately 5000 years ago, around 3,000 BCE. This makes it one of the more recent significant meteorite impacts known.
The impact site features several craters, with the largest being about 45 meters in diameter. These craters were formed by the high-velocity impact of the meteorite with the Earth's surface, creating a series of depressions and ejecta around the impact point.
The meteorite fragments found at this site are composed of nickel rich iron. Their exteriors weather to a lovely oxide red.
