It is believed that volcanic activity in the region millions of years ago created the conditions necessary for the formation of opal deposits. The opals in this area can be found in nodules or small veins within the volcanic rocks.

Green Opal from Rome, Oregon is often cut and polished into cabochons, which are smooth, rounded gemstones without facets.
