Description: The genus Phacops is a notable group of trilobites that lived during the Paleozoic Era, specifically in the Devonian period. These trilobites are often found in fossil collections due to their striking appearance and detailed preservation. Phacops trilobites are well-known for their large, prominent eyes, which were compound eyes with many lenses, providing a wide field of vision. The thorax (body) consists of multiple segments (typically 8 to 12) that are distinctly articulated. They had hard shells made of calcite, which is what was preserved by fossilization in these specimens. Trilobites shells would not grow with them - rather, they would molt and grow a new shell as they grew. This means a single trilobite might have left several fossils behind as it grew larger!
These Trilobites have been sand blasted. Unlike our scribed specimens, their matrix is very smooth. This doesn't affect the specimen itself, only it's matrix, which is a little more cleaned up but give a slightly less natural feel. So if that's your preference than this is the specimen for you.
