Description

Mined from: Wando Formation, South Carolina, U.S.A.

Era: Cenozoic, Quaternary Period
Geological Age:  2.6 mya

Description: This one of a kind woolly rhino tooth fossil specimen has a dark brown to black mineralized surface with visible enamel ridges, natural cracking, and worn chewing surfaces. The open channels and layered tooth structure show the heavy grinding form typical of large grazing mammals.

Woolly rhinoceroses lived during the Ice Age and were built for cold steppe environments, though fossil material from North America is unusual and should be treated as locality-reported unless confirmed by collection data. South Carolina Pleistocene deposits are better known for Ice Age material preserved in river, coastal, and dredged sediments.

Spiritually, rhino fossils are often associated with endurance, protection, strength, and ancient survival. This piece carries the symbolism of persistence through harsh environments and the grounded power of an animal built to withstand a difficult world.
