The surface shows contrasting fossil forms, with straight orthoceras sections cutting across the piece and curved ammonoid (goniatite-type) fragments adding variation. The color ranges from dark brown to black with lighter fossil outlines, and the polished finish highlights the internal structures while keeping the overall look natural.

This is a worked, decorative fossil stone. It is cut from Moroccan cephalopod limestone of the kind carved around Erfoud, with straight-shelled orthoceras sections. The coiled shells look like goniatites, Paleozoic relatives of the ammonites that are older than the dinosaurs. Decorative pieces like this are often assembled from more than one stone, so they are best enjoyed as fossil stone décor rather than as a single natural fossil bed.

Material like this comes from fossil-bearing limestone deposits in the Erfoud region, where ancient marine sediments accumulated and preserved cephalopods in large numbers. Over time, the original shell material was replaced or infilled with calcite, allowing the fossils to stand out clearly when cut and polished. These dishes are shaped from slabs of that fossil-rich rock, making each one a functional piece that still clearly shows its geological origin.

People are drawn to pieces like this for their connection to deep time and the visible record of ancient marine life. Symbolically, ammonites and orthoceras are often associated with continuity, evolution, and the passage of time, with many seeing them as grounding objects that reflect long-term change and natural cycles.

Small
Approximate Size of 1 piece: 31cm x 22cm x 1cm
Approximate Weight of 1 piece: 0.8kg

Large
Approximate Size of 1 piece: 43cm x 29cm x 1cm
Approximate Weight of 1 piece: 1.5kg

Quantity: 1pc

We do our best to buy quality products- although not every rock is the same.
