Description: These crab fossils leave a great impression! No, really. These nearly perfect impression's are left behind on a nice sized piece of host rock (Matrix). These crab impressions are so well defined you can make out their bodies, legs and in some cases even their little pinchers.

This species of crab is called Pinnixa Galliheri. Fossils of Pinnixa galliheri have been found in Miocene marine sediments in California. The species was first described in the early 20th century. As a member of the family Pinnidae, Pinnixa galliheri likely had a hard, calcified exoskeleton typical of decapod crabs. Unlike some other crab species with elaborate shell ornamentation, Pinnixa galliheri tends to have a relatively simple carapace. This may include subtle ridges or surface details, but it lacks the heavy ornamentation seen in some other crabs.
