Description

Mined from: Wegel Tena area, Wollo Province, Ethiopia

Description: This one of a kind Ethiopian Opal from Ethiopia has a chunky rough form with a pale cream to white body color, patches of warm honey, tan, and light brown staining, and visible natural matrix still attached on one side. The surface shows a good amount of play-of-color, with green, yellow, orange, pink, blue, and violet flashes showing across the broken faces and pitted, botryoidal-looking texture. Natural cracks, earthy inclusions, and rough edges are present throughout, giving the piece a raw field-collected look rather than a polished gemstone finish.

Ethiopian Opal is a newer major source of precious opal compared to Australian material, with notable deposits coming from the Welo and Shewa regions. Ethiopian opal is known for its strong color play, often showing bright fire even in rough form. This specimen shows the typical mix of pale opal, iron staining, natural matrix, and rainbow flash often associated with Ethiopian material.

Spiritually, Ethiopian Opal is often associated with creativity, emotional expression, inspiration, and personal growth. Many people use it as a stone for fresh ideas, mood lifting, and bringing buried feelings to the surface. Its shifting color is often tied to change, movement, and seeing things from more than one angle.
