Mined from: Saskatchewan, Red River Floodway

Description: A classic Canadian mineral specimen! The red river floodway is a man made canal built in the mid 1960's to protect the city of Winnipeg from flooding. These beautiful rosettes form in clay several meters below the surface when water rich in gypsum evaporates. Unfortunately, it has been illegal to enter the floodway to collect these specimens for over 20 years, making these specimens highly sought after and hard to find today.

Not only are these selenite specimens UV reactive but they are also phosphorescent! They glow a ghostly green-white color under UV light, and then continue to glow for several seconds after the UV light is removed! 

The floodway that these specimens come from is located in both Saskatchewan and Manitoba. This lot features specimens from the Saskatchewan side. We also have specimens from the more well known Winnipeg Manitoba locality, which feature a very similar growth habit but with striking golden color!
