Mined from: India
Description: Moss Agate is a translucent to milky variety of chalcedony distinguished by its green, moss-like inclusions. These patterns are not organic matter but mineral inclusions, usually iron or manganese oxides, that formed within the silica gel as it solidified into microcrystalline quartz. The branching inclusions resemble plant growth, giving the stone its name. Polished into a worry stone, Moss Agate displays intricate natural patterns with smooth edges and a glassy feel typical of well-formed chalcedony.
India is one of the principal sources of Moss Agate, particularly from the Deccan Traps region, where volcanic activity created silica-rich environments ideal for agate formation. Historically, Indian agates were exported worldwide through ancient trade routes, prized for their beauty and durability. The material remains a key part of India’s lapidary industry, with Moss Agate among the most recognizable and affordable ornamental stones.
Metaphysically, Moss Agate is associated with growth, renewal, and connection to nature. It is said to encourage patience and emotional balance, often used as a symbol of grounding and natural harmony.
