Description: After volcanic eruption these trees were buried by ash and lava which eliminated any microbes that would rot the wood. The wood was then replaced with silica rich minerals like quartz, calcite, and opal. The colours in the wood come from a range of trace elements such as iron and manganese.
Petrified wood is a type of fossil formed when plant material, typically wood, is buried under sediment and then subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. During this process, the organic material is replaced by minerals, usually silica, which crystallize and preserve the original structure of the wood. The result is a beautiful, often colorful stone that retains the grain and texture of the original wood.
