Description: Saccocoma is an extinct genus of small free-swimming crinoids (marine echinoderms related to modern sea lilies and feather stars) that lived during the Late Jurassic period, about 160 million years ago. Unlike many crinoids that anchored themselves to the seafloor with a stalk, Saccocoma floated freely in the water column, using long feather-like arms to capture microscopic food particles drifting in the ancient seas.
Fossils of Saccocoma are famously preserved in the fine limestone deposits of Eichstätt, Germany, part of the Solnhofen-type lithographic limestones of the White Jura (Oberjura Formation). These exceptionally fine sediments formed in calm lagoon environments that allowed delicate organisms to fossilize in remarkable detail. The same deposits have produced many famous Jurassic fossils, including fish, crustaceans, and the iconic Archaeopteryx, making this region one of the most important fossil localities in the world.
