The salt itself is old. It was laid down about 255 million years ago, when the shallow Zechstein Sea covered much of Europe and evaporated again and again, leaving salt layers up to 160 m thick. In the Sieroszowice mine in Poland's Legnica-Głogów Copper District, part of KGHM's Polkowice-Sieroszowice operation, those salt layers sit about 80 m above the copper-rich black shales mined roughly a kilometre underground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn July 2016, a 320 m tunnel in the copper level was abandoned. Groundwater leached salt from the layers above and dripped into the empty tunnel as brine. As it evaporated, it grew halite stalactites over a metre long, along with stalagmites and fast-growing skeletal, or hopper, cubes on the floor. Late in 2016, mine geologists found the tunnel full of these crystals.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe green colour formed only where brine dripped heavily into small pools. It comes from copper minerals picked up from the ore level, with tolbachite reported for the first time at the mine. Red patches came from rust off old mine hardware. Only about 200 to 300 good green specimens were collected before mining in the area was due to resume in 2017 and destroy the deposit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAt 22 cm, this piece is large for the find.
