Description: Andradite garnet is known for its high refractive index, which means that it has excellent brilliance and sparkle when cut and polished as a gemstone. It is also a relatively hard mineral, with a hardness of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable and long-lasting material for jewelry.
In addition to its use as a gemstone, andradite garnet has industrial applications as well. It is used in the manufacture of abrasives, as a filter medium for water purification, and as a radiation shielding material.
There are several varieties of andradite garnet, including demantoid, melanite, and topazolite. Demantoid is a green variety of andradite garnet that is highly valued as a gemstone due to its intense green color and high dispersion, which gives it a "fire" similar to that of a diamond. Melanite is a black variety of andradite garnet that is often used as a decorative stone. Topazolite is a yellow or brown variety of andradite garnet that is also used as a gemstone. (This is the black one).
