It was known on old mineral labels by its Hungarian and German names, Kapnik and Kapnikbánya. The ore deposit is a low-sulfidation epithermal system. Hot water circulating through young volcanic rocks deposited gold, silver, lead, zinc and copper in veins, and barite formed in the open cavities.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eMining in the Cavnic area goes back to medieval times, and the town is documented in the 14th century. The modern Cavnic mine opened in 1958 and produced gold, silver, copper, zinc and lead. It closed in 2007–2008, along with the rest of Maramureș mining, which goes back about 700 years in written records.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eMiners here saved crystal pockets as \"flori de mină\", or mine flowers. Cavnic barite grows as rosettes and fans of thin tabular blades, in colours from pale blue to honey and grey.
