Description: This one of a kind Barite mineral specimen from the Linwood Mine in Buffalo, Scott County, Iowa features a dense cluster of upright, well-formed crystals in gray, smoky brown, and light tan tones. The specimen has several larger blocky to thick tabular Barite crystals rising above a field of smaller crystals, giving it a layered, crowded structure. Many of the crystal faces have a fine natural coating or slightly frosted texture, while exposed edges and terminations show more of the mineral’s glassy luster. The larger crystals are especially noticeable for their broad faces and strong geometric shape.

Barite, also spelled baryte, is a barium sulfate mineral known for its unusually high density. Its name comes from the Greek word barys, meaning “heavy,” referring to the mineral’s noticeable weight compared with many other nonmetallic minerals.
