描述
Mined from: Korshunovskoye Mine, Zheleznogorsk-Ilimsky, Irkutsk Oblast, East Siberia, Russia
Description: This one of a kind Seraphinite specimen has been cut and polished to show broad, circular to fan-shaped patterns with a dark green to nearly black base and strong silvery feathering across the face. The polish brings out the internal fibrous structure clearly, giving each orb-like section a distinct radiating look. The specimen has a dramatic, graphic surface with multiple overlapping growth zones, making it especially strong as a display piece.
Seraphinite is not a separate mineral species, but a trade name used for a particularly attractive chatoyant variety of clinochlore. It became well known in the gem and mineral trade through material from Siberia, especially from the Korshunovskoye area, where its feathered internal structure made it stand out from more ordinary chlorite-rich material. The name comes from the resemblance of its silvery patterns to wings, and this specimen shows that effect especially well through its polished face and bold radial structure.
