Mined from: Madagascar

Description: Yellow sapphire is a yellow variety of corundum, one of the hardest natural minerals with a Mohs hardness of 9. Its color is caused primarily by trace amounts of iron within the aluminum oxide crystal structure. Rough yellow sapphire from Madagascar commonly ranges from pale yellow to deeper golden tones and may appear as irregular crystal fragments or partially formed hexagonal crystals. Madagascar has been a major source of sapphires since the late 1990s and produces a wide range of gem-quality corundum.

These sapphires form under high-temperature geological conditions in metamorphic rocks or basalt-related deposits. Over time, erosion releases the durable crystals into alluvial gravels where they are mined. Rough sapphire is widely used by gem cutters and lapidaries who wish to facet or study the natural structure of the stone before cutting.
