Beschreibung

Mined from: Western Sahara, North Africa

Description: This Martian shergottite, designated AMGALA 001, was recovered in 2022 from the Western Sahara and represents a rare piece of basaltic rock ejected from the surface of Mars. Classified as an olivine-phyric shergottite, it contains visible olivine crystals set within a finer-grained igneous matrix, formed from volcanic activity on Mars. These meteorites are thought to have been launched from the Martian surface by impact events and eventually made their way to Earth, preserving a direct sample of another planet’s geology.

Shergottites are among the most studied Martian meteorites due to their relatively young crystallization ages and well-preserved mineralogy. The presence of olivine, pyroxene, and shock-transformed plagioclase (maskelynite) provides insight into Mars’ volcanic processes and crustal composition. Finds like AMGALA 001 are typically recovered from desert environments where preservation conditions are ideal, making each specimen a scientifically valuable and collectible piece of planetary material.

Chemical Composition: (Ca,Na)(Mg,Fe,Al,Ti)(Si,Al)₂O₆ + (Mg,Fe)₂SiO₄ + maskelynite (shocked plagioclase); overall basaltic composition with Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, Al dominant and minor Ti, Cr, Na.
