Beschreibung

Locality: Katlang Topaz Mines, Mardan District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan

Katlang topaz comes from Ghundao, a small hill of grey recrystallised limestone that rises from the farmland of Mardan District about 4 km north of the town of Katlang. A 1986 study in Gems & Gemology by Edward Gübelin and colleagues described the deposit. Narrow calcite veins there hold pink topaz crystals up to 3 cm long, along with larger amounts of reddish brown, tan and colourless topaz.

The limestone of Ghundao hill is believed to be Silurian to Devonian in age, perhaps about 400 million years old. The topaz itself is much younger. A later study found it crystallised at only about 230 °C during the Eocene, in the mountain-building event that raised the Himalaya, rather than from fluids given off by a granite.

Katlang topaz is unusual in chemistry. Some of the fluorine normally found in topaz is replaced by hydroxyl, which slightly changes its optical properties and density. Gübelin and his co-authors found that the pink colour comes mainly from traces of chromium, and they reported more than 70,000 carats of gem-quality pink topaz from the deposit by 1986.

This one of a kind champagne topaz specimen has a stout, blocky crystal shape with a soft peach-champagne color and a clean natural termination. The crystal is fairly even in tone, with a satin-like surface in some areas and clearer windows along the edges and faces. It is not a glass-clean crystal, and that works in its favor as a specimen. You can see natural internal clouding, fine fractures, and growth features that show it formed in place rather than being cut or polished. The shape is strong and balanced, which gives it good display value.

One of the better features on this piece is the attached white matrix and small pale associated crystals along the sides and back. That attached material helps it read as a true mineral specimen rather than a loose crystal. Topaz commonly forms in fluorine-rich pegmatites, where hot, late-stage fluids allow large aluminum fluoro-silicate crystals to grow with well-defined faces. Pakistan is known for producing collectible topaz, especially crystals with solid geometry and good natural color. On this piece, the appeal is the combination of a broad crystal body, a soft natural champagne tone, and remaining matrix.

Metaphysically, champagne topaz is often chosen for steadiness, focus, and a quieter kind of confidence. It tends to appeal to people who want a stone that feels grounded and refined rather than flashy. The softer tone gives it a calm look, and many people are drawn to it as a symbol of balance and clear direction.
