Beschreibung

Locality: Kressenberg, Bavaria, Germany

Era: Cenozoic
Period: Eocene

Description: This fossil clam shell from Kressenberg, Bavaria, Germany dates to the Eocene Epoch, when warm, shallow tropical seas covered parts of southern Germany. During this time, marine environments supported a wide range of bivalve mollusks, including clams that lived partially buried in soft seabed sediments while filtering nutrients from the surrounding water. The fossilization of these shells occurred when sediments rapidly buried the organism after death, allowing the calcium carbonate shell to be preserved within the rock over millions of years.

The Eocene marine deposits of the Kressenberg area in Bavaria are known for preserving bivalves, nummulites, sea urchins and other invertebrates from these ancient seaways. Fossil clam shells like this help paleontologists reconstruct the tropical ocean ecosystems that followed the age of the dinosaurs.
