Locality: Bou Azzer Mine, Ouisselsate Caïdat, Amerzgane Cercle, Ouarzazate Province, Drâa-Tafilalet Region, Morocco
Description: Bou Azzer, in Morocco's Anti-Atlas about 120 km southwest of Ouarzazate, is the only district in the world where cobalt is mined from ores hosted in serpentinite. Local people long used the pink cobalt mineral erythrite as a rat poison and insecticide. In 1928 a geologist spotted erythrite for sale in Marrakech's Jemaa el-Fna square, which led to the first cobalt deposit being found. Artisanal mining began in 1932 and industrial mining in 1934, and the district still produces cobalt today.
The ores are cobalt, nickel and iron arsenides that formed where hot, very salty fluids moved along faults between serpentinite and harder rocks such as diorite. Later calcite veins in the district picked up cobalt, which substitutes for some of the calcium and turns the calcite pink to red.
These specimens are calcite coloured pink to red by cobalt, with the deeper colours where there is more cobalt.
In crystal traditions, cobalt calcite is associated with compassion and self-love.
