Ethiopian opal is a type of precious opal that is found in Ethiopia. It is a relatively new addition to the world of opals, as it was only discovered in 1994 in the Wollo Province of northern Ethiopia.

Ethiopian opals are prized for their unique play of color, which is caused by the diffraction of light as it passes through the microscopic silica spheres that make up the stone. The colors that can be seen in Ethiopian opals include red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. The stones can also exhibit a range of patterns, such as harlequin, flame, and honeycomb.

One of the distinguishing features of Ethiopian opals is their transparency. Unlike other opals, which can be opaque or milky, Ethiopian opals are often clear and transparent, which allows their colors to shine through.

It is important to note that opals in general are a relatively soft gemstone, with a rating of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. As a result, they require gentle care and protection to prevent scratches and damage.

Due to the fact that we have over 50 000 loose gemstones in store that all differ, we have chosen not to post every individual stone. What you see here is a sample from the larger batch. Please shop in store, or schedule a phone/ video appointment with us.
