Beschreibung

Mined from: Kolwezi Mining District, Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

Description: This malachite skull from the Congo shows a mix of deep green and lighter teal tones with swirling, almost liquid-like patterns across the surface. The carving highlights both smooth polished areas and natural cavities within the stone, giving it a more rugged and dimensional appearance than uniform pieces. Rounded botryoidal textures and layered banding are visible throughout, with occasional concentric “eye” formations that are characteristic of high-quality malachite from this region.

Malachite forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zones of copper deposits, where copper-rich fluids react with carbonate rocks and precipitate in layers over time. The Kolwezi area sits within the Central African Copperbelt, one of the most productive copper regions in the world. The banding seen in this piece reflects changes in chemical conditions during growth, while the botryoidal and porous sections indicate areas of faster or uneven mineral deposition within open spaces and fractures.

Malachite is often associated with protection, transformation, and awareness. It has historically been used as a talisman believed to absorb negative influences and support personal growth. Many people are drawn to its layered structure as a reflection of change over time, making it a symbolic stone for resilience and forward movement.
