Beschreibung

Mined from: Kolwezi Mining District, Lualaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo

Description: This carved malachite skull from the Congo features deep green tones with classic concentric banding and occasional eye-like patterns visible across the surface. Unlike highly polished pieces, this carving retains a more natural, textured finish that highlights the raw, uneven structure of the material. Variations in color—from dark forest green to lighter, almost mint-toned zones—trace the original mineral growth, giving the piece a rugged, organic appearance while still maintaining clear skull definition.

Malachite forms through the weathering and oxidation of copper-rich deposits, where copper carbonate minerals precipitate in fractures and cavities within sedimentary rock. The Kolwezi region is part of the Central African Copperbelt, one of the most significant sources of malachite globally. The distinctive banding forms as copper-rich fluids deposit layers over time, often creating circular or “bullseye” patterns that are highly sought after in both specimens and carvings.

Malachite is commonly associated with protection, transformation, and awareness. It has a long history of use as a talismanic stone, believed to absorb negative influences and encourage change. Many people are drawn to it during periods of transition, valuing it as a symbol of growth, strength, and forward momentum.
