Beschreibung

Locality: Kem Kem Group, south-eastern Morocco (likely Taouz/Erfoud area)

Era: Mesozoic (Cretaceous)

Geological Age: Cretaceous, Albian–Cenomanian, about 100–95 million years ago

Description: An extinct saw-snouted ray (Onchopristis), a sclerorhynchoid; not the ancestor of today's sawfish, which evolved their saws separately. Its long, flat snout was lined with sharp, tooth-like structures that gave it the look of a saw. These teeth come from the Kem Kem Group of south-eastern Morocco, dated to the Albian–Cenomanian stages of the Cretaceous, about 100 to 95 million years ago.

Onchopristis lived in the large river system of the Kem Kem, the same environment as Spinosaurus. Its rostral "teeth" are not true teeth but enlarged denticles set along the snout, each with a backward-pointing barb.
