Locality: Saddle Mountain, Washington and north of Quartzsite, Arizona, U.S.A. (a mix from both dig sites)
Geological Age: mixed; the Saddle Mountain pieces are Miocene (about 15 million years old)
Description: These are assorted fossil wood chips and shards from two of my favourite dig spots: Saddle Mountain, Washington, and a site about 20 minutes north of Quartzsite, Arizona. They're the small chips left in the bottom of my bucket after I collect the big chunks, so rather than throw them out or tumble them, I've collected them here for you. The collection includes various species.
Petrified wood is a type of fossil formed when plant material, typically wood, is buried under sediment and then subjected to heat and pressure over millions of years. During this process, the organic material is replaced by minerals, usually silica, which crystallize and preserve the original structure of the wood. The result is a beautiful, often colorful stone that retains the grain and texture of the original wood.
