Locality: Vtoroy Sovetskii Mine, Dalnegorsk, Primorsky Krai, Russia
Description: This calcite comes from the Second Sovetskii (Vtoroy Sovetskii) mine at Dalnegorsk, in Russia's Far East, part of the Partizanskoe lead-zinc deposit. The Dalnegorsk ore field has about ten polymetallic deposits and one boron deposit, all formed where hot fluids replaced limestone to make skarn. Calcite is one of the ore field's most famous collector minerals, and it has produced many world-class specimens.
At the Second Sovetskii mine, calcite grew late, in the upper parts of the skarn bodies, often on black sphalerite and galena. Some of it holds a little manganese, which gives it a soft pink colour, and it often forms stacked, platy crystals. The deposit is now one of several around Dalnegorsk that are no longer in production, so these pieces come from earlier finds.
This piece is a soft pink calcite showing a dense cluster of bladed crystals arranged in a rosette-like formation. The crystals are thin, slightly curved, and stacked in layered growth, giving the whole piece a textured, almost floral appearance. The pink color is consistent throughout the interior, with lighter edges and some white calcite overgrowths. There are also small dark inclusions scattered through parts of the piece, along with a few contrasting white, elongated secondary crystals adding depth and variation.
Material from Dalnegorsk, especially the Vtoroy Sovetskii Mine, comes from a well-known hydrothermal system where metal-rich fluids moved through carbonate rocks and replaced them over time. The pink coloration in this calcite is typically caused by trace amounts of manganese substituting into the crystal structure. These deposits are also known for complex mineral associations, which is why you often see multiple crystal generations and textures in a single specimen like this.
Metaphysically, pink calcite is often associated with emotional balance and calming energy. It’s commonly linked to easing stress and encouraging a more relaxed, steady mindset—less about intensity, more about settling things down and keeping your head clear.
